Police Inspector Ahmed Shiyam has been reinstated to the police service 12 years after he was dismissed over allegations of abuse of office.

Shiyam’s reinstatement follows a ruling by the High Court, which found that his dismissal had been unlawful. The decision overturned an earlier civil court ruling that stated he could not be ordered to return to his post.

In its judgement, the High Court ordered that Shiyam be reinstated and compensated with salary and allowances covering the period from his dismissal to his return to service. While the order for his reinstatement has been implemented, the prosecution has appealed to the Supreme Court against the High Court’s decision requiring payment of salary and allowances for the period he was out of service.

Following his return to the police force, Shiyam shared a message on social media expressing his appreciation for the opportunity to wear the police uniform again. He noted that the uniform held special significance for him, as he had been involved in its design.

“After a long time, I have been given the opportunity to serve the community wearing the uniform that I designed with my own hands. For me, this job and this uniform mean more than anything in my life,” he wrote.

At the time of his dismissal, Shiyam was serving as commander of the North Police Division. He also spent several years overseeing police media operations.
