Police Investigate Alleged Cat Killing in Hoarafushi

Authorities in Haa Alif Hoarafushi are investigating a case involving the alleged intentional abuse and killing of a cat, police confirmed.
The incident was reported to the Maldives Police Service at approximately 19:06 on Thursday. In response, officers have questioned three individuals and recorded statements relevant to the investigation, according to police.
Police said the matter remains under further investigation, and no charges have been filed at this time.
Officials have not released additional details regarding the suspects or the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse.
Under the Animal Welfare Bill (Act No. 23/2025), ratified last year, animal abuse can carry fines of up to MVR 1 million. The law also imposes penalties for illegal breeding, keeping animals in unregistered facilities, or violating animal care standards. Specifically, abuse or abandonment of animals in public places can result in fines ranging from MVR 5,000 to MVR 50,000.
