Distributing vape products without charge is subject to a MVR 10,000 fine, while distributing or selling to minors incurs an additional MVR 50,000 fine. Personal use of vape products is penalised with a MVR 5,000 fine.
The enforcement follows amendments to the Tobacco Control Act, which came into effect in last December, prohibiting the import, sale, and use of vape products in the Maldives. The amended legislation introduced a range of penalties for individuals and businesses found in violation.
The police have stated that enforcement will continue in accordance with the law to curb the use and circulation of prohibited tobacco products.
