Police Issue Warning Over Flash Call Scam Targeting Financial Accounts

Authorities have issued a warning regarding a new scam technique that uses flash calls instead of traditional one-time password (OTP) theft to gain unauthorised access to individuals’ financial accounts.
Flash calls are an automated authentication method used as an alternative to OTPs. Unlike traditional verification via text messages, flash calls involve receiving a missed call or a brief phone call from a service provider or financial institution. The last few digits of the calling number are used as the verification code.

In the past, scammers relied on phishing messages or fake customer service calls to trick victims into disclosing OTPs. However, the latest scam involves exploiting flash call verification. Fraudsters convince victims to share the last few digits of the missed call number under the pretext of authentication. If the digits are provided, scammers can use them to authorise fraudulent transactions or gain access to personal accounts.
To safeguard against this scam, the police have urged the public to adopt the following precautions:
- Avoid sharing the last digits of a flash call with anyone, even if they claim to represent a bank or service provider.
- Be wary of unexpected calls or messages requesting authentication codes or verification numbers.
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) using authenticator apps rather than SMS or call-based OTPs whenever possible.
- Report any suspicious calls or activities immediately to your bank and the police.
Authorities emphasised the importance of vigilance and public awareness to prevent financial losses and protect personal information.
