The Criminal Court has ordered the remand of a police officer on charges of obstructing police duty and engaging in aggressive behaviour.

The officer, Mohamed Mausoom, 22, from M. Kolhufushi, was arrested after allegedly obstructing duty and becoming involved in a fight when stopped at a police vehicle checkpoint. The court noted that, as a serving officer, Mausoom carried a high degree of responsibility in law enforcement and ordered him to be remanded in custody for two days.

The case follows the arrest of another policeman, Ali Manik, 43, from S. Hithadhoo, earlier this week. Ali, who works in police administration and resides at Iskandhar Barracks, was charged with entering a salon, causing a disturbance, damaging property, fighting with an employee, and obstructing police work.

The Criminal Court remanded Ali in custody for five days on Sunday. During the hearing, he told the court that he regularly visited the salon and claimed he was “not of sound mind” on the day of the incident, adding that he had not slept for several days.

Police have confirmed that Ali has been suspended without pay. The Professional Standards Command is investigating the criminal case while also pursuing administrative action.

The arrests underscore growing scrutiny of police conduct, with two officers now facing criminal proceedings within the span of a week.
