Law enforcement authorities abroad have collaborated with the Maldives Police Services (MPS) in identifying individuals within the country who have engaged in the downloading of illicit child pornography content via social media platforms.

During a press briefing held yesterday, Acting Head of the Crimes Against Children Department, Chief Inspector of Police Ahmed Sofwath Rauf, revealed that the police have initiated two separate investigations based on the information shared by international counterparts.

One of the cases has concluded its investigation process, with findings forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office for potential charges. Meanwhile, the other case remains under active investigation.

Highlighting the severity of these crimes, Sofwath emphasized the police’s commitment to pursuing cases involving the downloading of explicit imagery featuring children through various social media channels linked to Maldivian accounts.

Sofwath further noted that the victims in these cases are as young as two years old, underscoring the distressing nature of the offences.

While a 32-year-old male has been apprehended in connection with one of the cases, specific details regarding the arrest were not disclosed by the police.

Sofwath highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance the investigative capabilities of the Maldives police force through collaborative training programs conducted in partnership with international agencies, aimed at addressing such egregious criminal activities.
