Police Report Decrease in Crime Rates for Last Month

The Maldives Police Service has reported a reduction in crime rates across the country for September, attributing this positive trend to new initiatives in frontline policing. 

According to statistics released by the police, theft, traffic accidents, and drug-related offences were the most commonly reported crimes in both August and September. However, significant declines in these categories were noted in September compared to the previous month.

In September, there were 230 reported thefts, down from 327 in August, marking a decrease of 97 incidents. Traffic accidents also saw a decline, with 143 reported in September compared to 204 in August, a reduction of 61 cases. Additionally, drug offences decreased from 134 in August to 111 in September, reflecting a drop of 23 incidents.

Other crime statistics reveal similar trends. Reports of lost items decreased from 78 in August to 52 in September, a decline of 26 cases. Assaults dropped from 55 to 48, a decrease of 7 incidents. Embezzlement cases rose slightly from 38 in August to 43 in September, an increase of 5. Vandalism also saw a reduction, with reports decreasing from 50 in August to 40 in September, a decline of 10 cases.

Robbery incidents decreased from 46 in August to 32 in September, reflecting a drop of 14. Sexual offences fell from 43 to 12, a significant decrease of 31 cases. Counterfeit and forgery offences saw a slight decline, with 16 reported in August and 12 in September, a reduction of 4. Domestic violence cases also decreased from 31 in August to 11 in September, a decline of 20 incidents.

The overall crime statistics indicate a positive trend, with notable decreases in key crime categories from August to September, while a few categories, such as embezzlement, experienced slight increases.
