Police have seized 33 mobile phones from Maafushi Prison following reports of inmates being linked to scam cases.
The operation was carried out last Thursday and led to the confiscation of mobile phones of various brands, along with ear pods, headsets, phone charging cables and SIM cards. Authorities said the operation was launched after investigations revealed that some inmates were directly involved in scams reported to the police.
The Maldives Police Service confirmed that further investigations are underway and that additional operations will be conducted in collaboration with the Maldives Correctional Service to curb such activities.
Scam cases have been on the rise in recent months, with offenders using modern technology and various methods to extort money from victims. In response, police established an anti-scam centre on 17 March to handle such cases and to raise public awareness through social media platforms.
Prisoners have repeatedly been accused of taking part in scams, and measures have been introduced to prevent prohibited items from being smuggled into correctional facilities.
