A nationwide ban on the import, sale, free distribution, and use of vaping devices and e-cigarettes was introduced in mid-December last year as part of a government campaign against smoking, initiated under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration. The prohibition has since led to the emergence of a black market for such products.

Police statistics show that fines amounting to nearly MVR 1 million have been issued between December 2024 and July 2025 for offences related to the possession and use of vaping products.
