He delivered the remarks during the opening of the Local Policing Conference 2025, where he underscored the need for the police service to keep pace with a rapidly changing society. Although policing in the Maldives has a history spanning 90 years, he noted that major modernisation efforts only began two decades ago. He added that continuous shifts in legislation, public perception, technology and criminal trends require the police to adapt accordingly, including aligning policies with the priorities of each administration.
The Minister said the conference plays an important role in consulting frontline officers, who work most closely with communities, to shape policy in line with operational realities on the ground.
Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen said the conference aims to enhance police participation in the atolls and strengthen capacity across the islands. He noted that the police currently operate in 187 islands and emphasised the need to assess the criminal environment and trends in these areas to ensure officers receive training suited to local challenges.
