Police Suspends Officer Caught With Drugs

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has suspended a police officer found in possession of drugs during a raid conducted in Malé.

Acting on intelligence, officers arrested Aishath Shiyaza (31) of Dhilbahaaruge, Kurinbudhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and Saifullah Ahmed (26) of Haazaarumaage, Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll. The pair were apprehended near Masjidhul Al-Sultan Mohamed Ibn Abdullah on Ameenee Magu—commonly known as Viyafaariveringe Miskiy, a mosque frequented by local businessmen.

Police found three rubber packets containing a substance believed to be drugs, along with prohibited medicines, in their possession. As Shiyaza is a serving officer, MPS has suspended her pending further investigation.

Following their arrest, the Criminal Court remanded Shiyaza for five days and Saifullah for 10 days. The Drug Enforcement Unit is conducting the investigation, the police said.

In a separate operation on Friday, MPS detained two Maldivians near the Kulhudhufushi Airport for attempting to smuggle drugs to Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Kulhudhufushi via air. Officers arrested Mohamed Humaam Hussain Naeem (29) of Leed, Kulhudhufushi, and Abdulla Ibrahim (53) of Aroodhaage, Maafannu, Malé.

Police seized three rubber packets and a small plastic bag containing a substance believed to be drugs, with a total weight of 52.2 grams. The Criminal Court ordered Naeem to be held for ten days and Ibrahim for fifteen. Kulhudhufushi Police is investigating this case.
