Police to Remove Illegally Parked Vehicles to Improve Road Safety

MV+ News Desk | October 1, 2024

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has begun removing illegally parked vehicles that are obstructing public access as part of the “Green City” initiative.

Chief Inspector of Police and Head of Tow Facility Management, Ali Musthafa, told PSM News that the police will focus on assessing vehicles parked in areas that block public access, with priority given to those that impede public services. Older vehicles that are abandoned or contribute to the congestion will also be identified for removal.

The growing congestion on the roads has led to increased difficulties for both pedestrians and drivers, contributing to a rise in accidents and reckless driving. To address these challenges, the police are boosting their presence in high-traffic areas to maintain order and prevent incidents.

As part of broader efforts to alleviate traffic congestion, regulatory changes are also being considered. Additionally, plans are underway to develop new parking facilities, including 15 parking buildings in Hulhumalé that will accommodate up to 4,000 vehicles.
