Police Urges Caution Amid Intensifying Southwest Monsoon

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has issued a public advisory urging caution during adverse weather conditions as the southwest monsoon, locally known as Hulhan’gu, intensifies across all regions of the country.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the police have strongly discouraged sea travel unless absolutely necessary and emphasised the importance of adhering to all safety measures when undertaking such journeys. Additionally, they have advised against using small vessels for travel during this period.

Furthermore, the police have cautioned against visiting uninhabited islands and sandbanks and have advised against swimming in the ocean due to the prevailing weather conditions.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has extended the Orange Warning from Lhaviyani Atoll in the northern Maldives to Vaavu Atoll in the central region until 16:00 hrs today.

These areas are forecasted to experience heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong winds ranging from 34-40 miles per hour, with gusts reaching speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Sea conditions are expected to be very rough during this time.

Residents and travellers in affected areas are urged to exercise caution and stay updated on weather forecasts provided by the authorities.
