The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has taken the initiative to establish polling stations in Abu Dhabi, facilitating Maldivian citizens to participate in the forthcoming presidential election scheduled for next month.

Marking a historical first, this move will see the introduction of a ballot box for Maldivians within the United Arab Emirates.

According to the ECM, over 150 individuals have successfully registered themselves to exercise their voting rights from this overseas location.

In addition to Abu Dhabi, the ECM has identified four other nations where polling stations will be set up. These countries include Trivandrum in India, Colombo in Sri Lanka, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and London in the United Kingdom.

The ECM’s decision to establish these polling stations is part of a wider initiative encompassing eight countries housing Maldivian expatriates. The limited number of designated stations is reflective of the lower-than-expected number of registrations received.

Presently, a total of 65 resorts have expressed their commitment to hosting polling stations. It is anticipated that the count of ballot stations may undergo adjustments as the election approaches.

The ECM has shared that an aggregate of 35,849 individuals have successfully re-registered for participation in the upcoming presidential election.
