A widespread power outage occurred across Malé City and Hulhumalé today due to a technical issue.
The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) confirmed the disruption and stated that the problem is being identified and resolved.
Two days earlier, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced a reduction in domestic electricity rates, with the changes taking effect from 1 June.
The revised tariffs are intended to be introduced in a sustainable manner. The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) will oversee the implementation and has been tasked with directing utility providers, including STELCO and FENAKA Corporation, to apply the new rates.
Under the new structure, the rate for domestic electricity usage has been reduced from MVR 4.25 to MVR 3.80 per unit. The reduction is expected to lower monthly bills for households, particularly those consuming more than 500 units of electricity.
