Electricity has been restored to Malé and Hulhumalé nearly three hours after a widespread outage began this morning.

The State Electric Company (STELCO) said on X that it had resolved the technical issue that caused the disruption. The company urged customers still without electricity to contact its hotline at 104 and apologised once again for the inconvenience.

About half an hour before full restoration, STELCO announced it was working to return power to the remaining areas of Malé and was energising the Greater Malé Interconnection Grid. The outage began at around 9:40 a.m., and while the company confirmed a technical fault was to blame, it did not provide further details. Power was gradually restored in sections throughout the morning.

This is the second time this year that Malé and Hulhumalé have experienced a full power outage.

Malé City Mayor Adam Azim said the disruption had affected residents’ daily lives and called on authorities to ensure a reliable power supply.

“I urge the relevant authorities to address these issues urgently and ensure a stable, reliable electricity supply for our community,” he said.
