In a statement, the PPM accused the MNDF of disseminating misinformation regarding the presence of Indian troops in the Maldives.
The party alleged that, under pressure from the government, individuals within the ranks of Indian soldiers and generals have been actively involved in spreading misleading information through state media channels. This alleged campaign, the PPM contends, is aimed at intimidating and influencing lower-ranking officers within the MNDF.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) officials, yesterday, have addressed concerns and allegations regarding the presence of foreign military forces in the country, assuring that no foreign troops are stationed in the Maldives for military purposes.https://t.co/TsMGNphLTH— MV+ (@mvplusmedia) September 12, 2023
The PPM statement further condemned what it sees as government efforts to perpetuate this misinformation by exerting undue influence on the armed forces. The party emphasised that the issue of Indian troop presence in the Maldives, the nature of existing agreements with the Indian government, and concerns over Indian involvement in Maldivian affairs were reflected in the results of the recent presidential election.
The party also underscored the MNDF’s duty to safeguard the independence and sovereignty of the nation, asserting that the government’s actions could be seen as an attempt to interfere with these responsibilities.
The PPM’s allegations raise significant questions about the role of the MNDF in relation to foreign military presence in the Maldives and the extent of government influence on the nation’s security forces.
