The party had offered the ticket to the former President, Abdullah Yameen; however, due to an ongoing prison sentence, his eligibility to contest the election remains uncertain.
Dr. Jameel previously served as Vice President during Yameen’s presidency in 2013. However, during his tenure, a vote of no confidence was passed against him on July 21, 2015, leading to his removal from the position.
At present, Dr. Jameel also assumes the role of heading Yameen’s legal team, further solidifying his connection with the former president.
Abdullah Yameen was nominated by the PPM as their presidential candidate, but his prospects of candidacy are obstructed by an 11-year prison sentence for charges related to bribery and money laundering.
Unless his sentence is overturned or commuted before the election deadline on the 7th of next month, Yameen’s chances of participating in the race for office are slim. One of the three cases linked to the charges is yet to be filed in court, making it improbable for the High Court to reach a decision in time.
