In a significant development, the coalition led by former President Abdullah Yameen has resolved not to pursue a boycott of the upcoming presidential election, in contrast to Yameen’s initial directive. A total of 126 members convened for the meeting, where the decision was reached.
The outcome of the meeting saw 67 Members of Parliament vote against the proposed boycott of the presidential election. On the other side of the debate, 46 MPs aligned with Yameen’s call for the election boycott.
Yesterday, the Supreme Court issued a ruling in favour of the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM), upholding its decision to disqualify Yameen from contesting in the presidential election.
Following this ruling, Yameen submitted a formal notice to the leadership of PPM/PNC, urging a boycott of the presidential election should the Senate conclude that his rights had been infringed upon. The Senate then conducted a vote on this matter.
Prominent among the MPs advocating for the boycott of the election were those closely associated with Yameen.
Yameen’s original intention to boycott the election had created a situation wherein, should this opportunity not materialise, the PPP/PNC would nominate the Mayor of Male’ as their candidate.
This nomination of Muizzu, had received approval from the PNC Senate. Additionally, Muizzu has taken the decision to appoint Hossain Mohammed Lateef, the MP for Faresmathoda, as his running mate.
Notably, the deadline for the submission of nomination forms is set for 2 pm today.
