Practical work on the long-awaited land reclamation project in Veymandoo, Thaa Atoll, has officially commenced.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the start of the project through a social media post, describing it as a significant milestone in the government’s development plans for the region.
The project was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and was formally granted during the president’s official visit to Thaa Atoll. The decision was first announced at a community meeting held in Veymandoo in September last year, where the president outlined the scope of the initiative.
Under the project, 25 hectares of new land will be dredged and reclaimed for the island. The development is expected to address the land shortage faced by the community and create additional space for housing.
The reclaimed area is also expected to support economic activity by providing land for industrial development and other infrastructure projects.
Alongside the reclamation project, the government has also awarded a separate project to modernise the Veymandoo harbour as part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure on the island.
