The practical work on the planned Shaviyani Bilehfahi Airport has officially been handed over to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), marking the formal resumption of the project.
Under the new arrangement, both the land reclamation and operational responsibilities have now been assigned to MACL. The agreement was signed by State Minister of Finance Husham Ali and MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef during a ceremony held in Bilehfahi. The event was attended by Minister of Local Government Adam Shareef and the President of the Bilehfahi Council, who jointly inaugurated the commencement of the airport’s practical work.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited Bilehfahi as part of his ongoing tour of Shaviyani Atoll, where he announced that the airport project will be completed within two and a half years. He said the development, which will cover an estimated 36 hectares, represents a significant advancement for the atoll’s transport infrastructure.
According to the President, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) will undertake the investment, construction, and operation of the airport. He further stated that the land reclamation phase is expected to be completed within eight months, after which the remaining construction activities will proceed at an accelerated pace to meet the 30-month completion target.
The airport, which was first planned during the previous administration led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, initially involved the reclamation of 56.34 hectares of land awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). However, despite initial preparations, the project did not progress to the construction stage before the end of that administration.
