President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced an increase in the allowance for single mothers and the introduction of a new allowance for thalassaemia patients, effective from January 2026.
Speaking to residents in Laamu Gan during his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands of the atoll, the President said MVR 211 million has been allocated in next year’s State budget to raise the allowance for single mothers to MVR 3,000 per child. The allocation has an upper limit of MVR 12,000 per parent.
The move fulfills pledges made during President Muizzu’s campaign, reflecting his commitment to support groups previously overlooked by government programmes. Currently, single parents receive MVR 2,000 for a single child, or MVR 1,000 per child if they have more than one.
Additionally, MVR 11.7 million has been set up to fund a newly introduced allowance for thalassaemia patients, providing MVR 1,000 per month for each patient.
