President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has introduced an eyewear service in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) as part of ongoing health sector reform efforts.
Speaking in an interview with Public Service Media (PSM), President Muizzu said the initiative follows public demand and assessments carried out by the government. The service will be available at IGMH and other state-run hospitals. The Aasandha allowance for eyewear has been raised to MVR 2,000.
The President said the move is intended to reduce reliance on private providers and addressed concerns about pricing in the sector. He also referenced previous measures his administration took, including efforts to discourage cigarette sales, as part of a wider health policy.
According to the President, more than MVR 400 million in healthcare projects are currently underway across the country. These include developments aimed at improving hospital infrastructure, strengthening the healthcare workforce, and expanding available medical services. Hospitals in the Malé region are a particular focus, with the stated aim of reducing the need for overseas treatment.
President Muizzu stated that the health sector will be the first to undergo a full digital transformation under the government’s digitalisation policy. He highlighted the role of preventive healthcare and long-term planning in the government’s approach.
