President Continues Atoll Tour with Pledges on Digitalisation, Fisheries, and Infrastructure

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu yesterday concluded his visits to Faafu Atoll and began touring Meemu Atoll, as part of his eight-day trip across four atolls. During the visits, he pledged new digitalisation initiatives alongside airport and infrastructure development projects.

Starting Friday, the President aims to visit 31 islands across four atolls within eight days, the President’s Office said. His first stop was Vaavu Atoll, where he pledged land reclamation, harbour development, and other infrastructure projects. He also discussed relocation options for residents of Rakeedhoo who wish to move closer to Malé for better access to essential services. He had visited several islands in Faafu Atoll on Saturday and made pledges regarding harbour expansion, land reclamation, and airport development during his visits.

Digitalisation Drive in 2026 Budget

In Muli, Meemu Atoll, the President announced that a significant share of the 2026 national budget would be allocated to digitalisation, to digitise all public services by 2026. He said the initiative would extend through 2027 and early 2028 in partnership with the private sector.

The President also highlighted plans for a 20-year development master plan to be shaped through nationwide community consultations. Legislation is being drafted to ensure continuity of the plan across administrations.

Fisheries and Infrastructure Plan for Mulah

During his visit to Mulah, the President announced a wide-ranging plan to strengthen the fisheries sector and speed up local development. Key projects include a 30-tonne ice plant, cold storage facilities, a fuel skid project, and the upgrade of the Health Centre into a hospital. He also pledged housing, harbour and road development, a Fitness and Recreation Centre, and measures to address coastal erosion.

Accelerated Development for Veyvah

In Veyvah, President Muizzu assured residents that stalled projects would resume and be completed this year and early next year. He confirmed harbour development will be included in the 2026 budget, pledged to resolve school space constraints by the start of the 2026 academic year, and announced health centre upgrades within this year.

Magoodhoo Airport Completion Within a Year

The President pledged to complete the long-awaited airport in Faafu Atoll, Magoodhoo, within 12 months. He also confirmed the start of a multipurpose school hall and a health centre this year, with harbour upgrades included in the next budget. During the visit, he inaugurated a Bank of Maldives ATM and laid foundation stones for the Fitness and Recreation Centre, the Island Council Secretariat, and a new police post.

Key Projects for Dharan’boodhoo 

In Dharan’boodhoo, the President pledged to complete ongoing development projects, including upgrades to the Health Centre, new sports and recreation facilities, and a police station. He also promised to allocate funds in the 2026 budget to tackle coastal erosion.

Island councils and community groups highlighted further needs such as shore protection, a multipurpose hall, and additional classrooms, which the President pledged to consider in future development plans.
