President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has changed the jurisdiction of two islands in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll as part of efforts to strengthen tourism and address local development needs.
Uthuru Athafaru will now be designated as part of Hangnaameedhoo to support the island’s growing tourism sector, while Alikoe Rah will be developed as a special island for tourist excursions under the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
Speaking to residents of Hangnaameedhoo during his ongoing atoll tour, the President highlighted the island’s expanding role in local tourism, noting that many residents are involved in guesthouse operations. He said the Government’s decision would create more opportunities for local businesses and further enhance the tourism industry.
President Muizzu assured that Alikoe Rah will not be leased to external parties and will remain accessible to guesthouse operators from Hangnaameedhoo and neighbouring islands in line with established guidelines. He also announced a coastal protection project and the establishment of a boatyard area as a single integrated initiative, with other planned developments to be included in next year’s budget.
In addition, the President designated Fofalha Gau (RF 1185) lagoon as part of Kun’burudhoo, following a proposal from the island’s residents. The move aims to provide additional land for economic activities and to help address Kun’burudhoo’s housing challenges.
The changes were formalised through Decree No. 28/2025, amending Presidential Decree No. 2/2025, which specifies the inhabited islands of the Maldives. The amendment was made under the authority of the Decentralisation Act (Law No. 7/2010) and published in the Government Gazette.
