President Dr Mohamed Muizzu conveyed International Women’s Day greetings to Maldivian women while highlighting policies introduced by his administration to strengthen women’s development and participation.
Speaking at a ceremony organised by the People’s National Congress to launch the Greater Addu Vision yesterday evening, the president said the government has implemented several reforms aimed at empowering women and strengthening community-level institutions.
He pointed to legal changes introduced by the administration to strengthen Women’s Development Committees across the country. Under the reforms, chairpersons of the committees now serve as elected full-time executives, and members receive Ramadan allowances.
The president also noted that the government has increased the budget allocation for the committees from five percent to ten percent, adding that the Ramadan allowance is provided from councils’ overall budgets rather than from funds allocated specifically for the committees.
According to the president, the administration has also introduced economic empowerment measures to support women, including loan schemes and other initiatives announced in this year’s Presidential Address. He said advancing women’s development and integrating women’s empowerment into national policy remain key priorities of the government.
During the ceremony, President Muizzu also outlined the administration’s development plans for Addu City, describing several infrastructure and economic projects planned for the city.
He said the government had signed an agreement to address the city’s energy needs by developing a facility capable of adding 26 megawatts of electricity to the power grid. The project is expected to be completed by July next year and is intended to meet the city’s electricity demand for the next two decades.
The president added that 48 development initiatives are planned for the islands of Addu City, with an additional 18 projects to be introduced under new policy initiatives. He also stated that the government is procuring the required equipment, machinery, and labour to complete road construction across the city.
