President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inspected the progress of the government’s ongoing land reclamation project at Giraavaru Falhu yesterday, as part of efforts to address the housing shortage, a key priority for the administration.
Upon arrival, the President was received by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib, along with cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament, and Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, as well as senior management of the company.
During the visit, the President was briefed on recent developments and inspected the ongoing reclamation works.
Under the second phase of the project, MACL is set to reclaim 97.15 hectares, of which 35 hectares have been completed. In the first phase, Maldives Fund Management Corporation Limited (MFMC) reclaimed 70 hectares.
In total, the two phases will result in 167.15 hectares of reclaimed land at Giraavaru Falhu, with 105 hectares completed so far.
The President has been providing regular updates on the project via his official account on X. In a post on 21 March, he stated that reclamation and land plot survey works are expected to be completed by the end of April, with the handover of land plots scheduled to begin in June.
