President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced new infrastructural projects for the islands of Fodhdhoo, Velidhoo, Magoodhoo and Maamendhoo in Noonu Atoll yesterday.
The President is currently on a four-day visit to Noonu Atoll, during which he plans to tour 13 islands. He is scheduled to conclude the trip today.
In Velidhoo, the President confirmed plans to establish a seaplane platform, which is expected to become operational by January 2026. The platform aims to enhance logistics and support the island’s tourism-related enterprises. Sea ambulance services are also set to begin early next year, with vessels stationed on the island.
After years of delays, the harbour development project in Fodhdhoo is now underway. The President announced that the island council will be authorised to generate income through a management arrangement for the protected Fodhdhiparu lagoon, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and other relevant agencies. This initiative reflects a shift towards more localised revenue-generation models based on environmental and marine assets.
During his address in Fodhdhoo, the President highlighted the launch of several key development initiatives. He confirmed that physical work on the long-anticipated harbour project commenced today, fulfilling a 40-year aspiration of the community. He also laid the foundation stones for the island’s new Police Post and Fitness and Recreation Centre.
In Miladhoo, coastal protection and road development projects are scheduled to begin in August. The government noted that the coastal works will accommodate future land reclamation and preserve access for beach-based activities, aligning with potential tourism or commercial use.
In Magoodhoo, authorities have restructured the delayed water and sewerage project among several state-owned enterprises. MWSC will manage procurement, while Fenaka will oversee implementation. Coastal protection works are also expected to commence in the coming months.
