Maldivians voted yesterday across three major electoral processes, including local council elections, Women’s Development Committee polls and a referendum on whether to merge presidential and parliamentary elections. Voting began at 8:00 in the morning, with polling stations closing queues at 17:00, while ballot counting remains ongoing.

As of 4 PM, out of 294,876 eligible voters, a total of 185,709 people cast their ballots, representing a turnout of over 62 per cent.

Preliminary results show that a majority of voters opposed the proposal to merge the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections, with counts showing 68.7% per cent voting against the change and 31.2% per cent in favour.

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party secured mayoral victories in five cities, including Malé, Addu City, Fuvahmulah, Thinadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi, with incumbent mayors retaining their seats.
