Kanditheemu Health Centre to Expand to 20 Beds
During his visit to Kanditheemu, President Muizzu announced the expansion of the local health centre into a two-storey facility with a 20-bed capacity and an extended range of medical services. The project will be outsourced to a new contractor and is part of the Government’s plan to develop the centre into a regional healthcare hub.
The President also laid the foundation stone for the new Bank of Maldives branch on the island, expected to be completed by March next year. Work has already begun on a Fitness and Recreation Centre and a new Police Station, alongside agreements for a comprehensive road development project and coastal protection initiative.
President Muizzu confirmed that authorities are working to extend water, sewerage, and electricity services to newly reclaimed areas. Upgrades to the island’s football pitch are also included in next year’s national budget. He met with members of the Kanditheemu Island Council, Women’s Development Committee, and local institutions to discuss development priorities, assuring that the Government will address concerns such as road and harbour construction and lab staffing at the health centre.
Goidhoo Health Centre Construction to Start This Year
The President confirmed that the construction of a new two-storey health centre in Goidhoo, featuring a 20-bed capacity, including private rooms, a ward, and triage and consultation areas, will begin this year. He added that the long-delayed Goidhoo School project will be completed before the next academic year, with Fenaka Corporation overseeing the construction of eight new classrooms.
Other planned projects include a new football ground, as well as volleyball and handball courts, all reflected in the 2026 national budget. President Muizzu also assured measures will be taken to support the island’s agricultural community.
Bileiyfahi Airport and Local Infrastructure to be Completed Within 30 Months
President Muizzu assured residents of Bileiyfahi that the development of the island’s airport will be completed within 30 months, with visible progress on the ground to ensure timely completion. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) will oversee the project following an agreement formalised during the visit.
The President reaffirmed that other projects, including water and sewerage upgrades, stalled waste management solutions, and harbour improvements, remain a priority. Educational developments include eight classrooms and a multipurpose hall, while the health centre will expand to 16-hour services. Plans for a modern football stadium, handball, and volleyball courts are also included in the 2026 budget.
During a meeting at the Bileiyfahi Council Secretariat, island council members and the Women’s Development Committee outlined priorities such as harbour upgrades, coastal protection, school expansions, and dedicated spaces for women, including an indoor gym. President Muizzu assured participants that the Government will consider their concerns while continuing work on ongoing development projects, accompanied by Cabinet ministers and senior officials from State-Owned Enterprises.
