President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will introduce a National Engineers’ Award from 2026 to recognise the contributions of engineers to the nation.

He made the announcement while addressing the inaugural National Engineers’ Day, celebrated in the Maldives for the first time. The President extended his appreciation to engineers across various sectors and declared 30 August as “Maldives Engineers’ Day”, to be observed annually at the national level. The date was chosen to coincide with the inauguration of the Sinamalé Bridge, the country’s largest infrastructure project.

Reflecting on the bridge’s impact on the social and economic life of Maldivians over the past seven years, President Muizzu underscored the central role of engineers in achieving the Administration’s goals, including transforming the Maldives into a developed nation by 2040, advancing digitalisation, and meeting renewable energy targets.

“Given the unique characteristics of the Maldives, achieving modern advancements in civilisation and culture can only be accomplished through the planning and expertise of our engineers,” he said.

The President reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to expanding opportunities for academic research, education, and training in engineering fields, in addition to introducing the new award.

Concluding his address, President Muizzu highlighted the ingenuity of Maldivian ancestors and said today’s engineers continue this legacy by driving national progress. He ended with a prayer for a golden era of prosperity for the Maldives.
