President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to introduce new legislation to regulate the use of artificial intelligence in the Maldives.
The announcement was made during the President’s weekly press conference in response to questions on the government’s digital strategy, signalling an approach focused on regulating emerging technologies alongside their adoption. The proposed legislation is expected to form a key component of the broader Maldives 2.0 digitalisation initiative.
The President confirmed that the government intends to submit the AI bill to the People’s Majlis alongside three previously announced bills, including a Digital Transformation Bill, a Digital Identity Bill, and a Cybersecurity Bill, all outlined during this year’s Presidential Address.
The government aims to complete the digitisation of the state system by next year, in line with the planned introduction of the AI legislation. The initiative is intended to strengthen governance frameworks and improve the efficiency of public services.
As part of the wider digital transformation, the administration is also working to establish a unified network for civil registration services by the end of this year. The project is expected to enhance service delivery and position the Maldives as a leading provider of civil registration services in the region.
