President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced yesterday that 27 bills are being prepared for submission to the current parliamentary session, including a constitutional amendment to enable concurrent presidential and parliamentary elections. The move forms part of the Government’s efforts to introduce essential legislative reforms aimed at providing comprehensive solutions to national challenges.
Speaking to residents in Mahibadhoo during his tour of Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, the President noted that Parliament is currently reviewing 18 bills and highlighted that of the 27 bills scheduled for submission this session, 12 will introduce new legislation. The proposed constitutional amendment would require a public referendum for implementation.
President Muizzu also stated that six of the bills would focus on combating corruption, including amendments to close legal loopholes and strengthen anti-corruption measures.
“We are introducing these amendments to remove barriers in the current laws to address corruption and to eliminate it in its truest sense.” President Muizzu said
Among the planned amendments are revisions to the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Act, the Asset Recovery Bill, the Criminal Procedure Act, and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act. Additional amendments are expected for the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the Penal Code, and the Judicature Act to ensure courts can perform their duties without constraint.
“Legislative amendments alone are not enough; the support of all citizens is crucial in eradicating corruption,” he said.
The President expressed confidence that these reforms would enhance the effectiveness of the judiciary, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Maldives Police Service, and the Prosecutor General’s Office in addressing corruption and strengthening governance across the country.
