Harbour Expansion, Land Reclamation and Coastal Protection in Dhan’gethi

In Dhan’gethi, President Muizzu assured residents that key development projects — including harbour expansion, land reclamation, and coastal protection — will proceed in line with community priorities. Speaking at Dhan’gethi School Hall, the first stop on the tour, the President described the three projects as interconnected and essential to the island’s urban and economic growth. He confirmed that the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) will undertake the initiatives to address the island’s most pressing needs.

The President also announced additional development measures, including the construction of ten new classrooms and a multipurpose hall at Dhan’gethi School, as well as the installation of air-conditioning in existing school facilities. On healthcare, he said construction of the Health Centre’s extension building will begin once the allocated land is ready.

Recognising the island’s growing tourism sector, President Muizzu revealed plans to introduce US dollar ATM services in Dhan’gethi by the first quarter of 2026. He also announced the development of a modern football pitch, to be included in the 2026 national budget. During his visit, he attended ceremonies to mark the start of the Dhan’gethi Fitness and Recreation Centre, the construction of a new police post, and the council secretariat.

Meeting with the Dhan’gethi Island Council, WDC, and local institution heads, President Muizzu listened to requests including the expedited completion of the health centre extension and harbour expansion, land reclamation, a Bank of Maldives branch, and the installation of a dollar ATM. Council members also highlighted the need to modernise the football field and expand school infrastructure. The President assured participants that the Government would carefully consider their priorities.

Pledges Community-Driven Solution to Housing Issue in Dhigurah

In Dhigurah, President Muizzu addressed community concerns regarding housing allocation. He committed to resolving the issue in a manner reflecting local preferences, noting that the existing land-use plan and guidelines have limitations. The President confirmed that 50 new housing plots would be incorporated into a revised plan, and directed the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure to update relevant guidelines for fairness and equity. The Island Council was instructed to conduct public consultations on the revised plan to ensure community input.

President Muizzu also announced several development initiatives under the 2026 budget, including an accommodation block for expatriate workers and a modern football stadium. During his visit, he witnessed the groundbreaking for the Police Post, the commencement of coastal protection works, and the inauguration of the Health Centre Office Building. He also presided over agreements related to road development and school upgrading projects.

Meeting with the Dhigurah Island Council, WDC, and local institutional heads, President Muizzu discussed urgent priorities such as harbour upgrades, road improvements, and sports facilities for youth. Council members also called for a dollar ATM, a convention centre, and a dedicated sports facility to promote community engagement and economic activity. The President assured that the Government would address these concerns, while Cabinet ministers and senior officials provided updates on ongoing projects.

The President’s tour of Alifu Dhaalu Atoll continues, reflecting his commitment to maintaining direct engagement with communities and ensuring that development initiatives are aligned with local needs.
