President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised the importance of responsible and proactive broadcasting across news, information, and entertainment sectors.
In a message shared on his official X account to mark National Broadcasting Day yesterday, President Muizzu said broadcasters should strive to deliver content that upholds Islamic principles, reflects Maldivian values, and benefits audiences. He also urged broadcasters to contribute to efforts that foster national pride.
“Everything related to broadcasting, including news, information, and entertainment, must be presented responsibly. Every broadcaster should aim to produce useful and Maldivian content that aligns with Islamic values, contributing positively to the country’s reputation,” President Muizzu stated.

National Broadcasting Day, observed annually on 4 October, commemorates the day the first broadcast test signal was made in the Maldives on 4 October 1961. Broadcasting services officially began on 29 December 1962 with the launch of Dhivehiraajjeyge Adu radio. The day highlights the role of broadcasters in nation-building, strengthening democratic values, and raising public awareness.
The President’s remarks come shortly after he ratified the Maldives Broadcasting and Media Regulation Act last month. The law has drawn criticism from local and international watchdogs, who argue it could restrict freedom of speech. In response, the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has established a self-regulatory body, the Press Council Committee, as part of a collective stance of non-compliance against the newly formed Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission under the Act.
