President Muizzu Concludes Meemu Atoll Tour, Launches Development Projects in Thaa Atoll

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu concluded his tour of Meemu Atoll yesterday and began visiting Thaa Atoll as part of his ongoing tour of four atolls in the Maldives. 

Since Friday, he has visited Vaavu, Meemu, and Faafu Atolls, meeting residents, inaugurating projects, and outlining new development plans. The eight-day tour will cover 31 islands.

100-Housing-Unit Project in Kolhufushi for 2026

During his visit to Kolhufushi, President Muizzu confirmed a 100-unit housing project under the 2026 budget. He announced lower lease rates for government-developed units and outlined plans to resolve the island’s electricity challenges.

The President also highlighted initiatives, including a new school building, a football stadium, a handball court, and the introduction of Raajje Transport Link services. Residents raised concerns over stalled resort projects, harbour conditions, sports facilities, access to higher education, and healthcare. President Muizzu assured that these issues would be addressed and provided updates on ongoing projects.

He also toured the historic Ghaazee Mosque, inspecting its condition and discussing preservation efforts. Built by national hero Bodu Thakurufaanu, the mosque incorporates timber from his famed vessel, Kalhuohfummi, and historically safeguarded Thakurufaanu’s sword. The mosque sustained damage during the 2004 tsunami and holds significant cultural and historical value.

50-Unit Housing and Community Projects for Madifushi

In Thaa Atoll, President Muizzu met with the Madifushi Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee, and heads of local institutions at Madifushi School. He announced a 50-unit housing project for 2026 and inaugurated several initiatives, including a new school, a Fitness and Recreation Centre, an extension of the Health Centre, and road development.

The President assured residents that the ice plant would be completed soon, a police vehicle would be provided, and Ufuriyaa and Kolhufushi in Thaa Atoll would be integrated under Madifushi’s jurisdiction. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to residents’ well-being and the advancement of ongoing development projects.

Airport, Hospital, and Infrastructure Plans for Vilufushi

President Muizzu also visited Vilufushi, meeting the Island Council, Women’s Development Committee, and local institution heads at the Secretariat of the Vilufushi Council. Council members highlighted urgent priorities, including completion of the 100 new housing units with water, sewerage, and electricity services, harbour expansion, a jetty for small dinghies, and relocation of the mosque to establish an Islamic Centre.

Other proposals included a Maldives National University campus, an artificial beach or picnic island, modernised roads, upgraded sports facilities, and completion of harbour pavement works.

The President announced major development projects for Vilufushi, including the completion of the airport within 30 months and a new hospital within 18 months. He confirmed the installation of utilities in housing units, 100 additional units next year, post-2004 tsunami housing solutions, a Bank of Maldives branch, harbour expansion, road upgrades, sports facilities, a Public Works Unit, and the launch of passport issuance services.

Harbour Development and Housing Projects for Buruni

President Muizzu assured residents of Kolhumadulu Buruni that work on the island’s harbour development will begin promptly. During a meeting at Buruni School, he announced a 30-unit housing scheme for the 2026 budget and plans to redesign the shore protection project to include a jetty for reef fishing.

Residents and Island Council representatives shared proposals and concerns on infrastructure, education, health, and housing. MTCC was contracted to build an outdoor volleyball court. The President emphasised that upcoming projects will prioritise residents’ needs and provided updates on ongoing initiatives.
