President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has defended the passage of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Bill by the parliament, emphasising that the legislation aligns with the nation’s values and legal framework.

He said this during the ninth episode of the podcast published today by the President’s Office Rayyithunaa Eku, meaning With the Citizens.

President Muizzu said the law is not open for debate in a country where Islam forms the basis of society. He highlighted that while all types of content can be produced, it must be truthful and not cause harm.

“I do not believe it is something Maldivians want—that content can be published without truth, potentially harming others,” he said.

President Muizzu added that Islam places importance on protecting an individual’s reputation, noting that every person is entitled to dignity. He noted that the legislation reflects both religious principles and societal standards.

The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act was passed yesterday during a special parliamentary sitting held outside of recess, despite protests from journalists and the public calling for the bill’s withdrawal. Both local and international watchdog organisations have also criticised the legislation and urged its repeal.
