President Dr Mohamed Muizzu departed for the People’s Republic of China on Friday at the invitation of President Xi Jinping to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
During the visit, President Muizzu will hold bilateral meetings with President Xi and other foreign leaders. He is also scheduled to take part in high-level engagements on the sidelines of the summit.
Notably, President Muizzu will address the SCO Plus meeting, where he is expected to highlight the role of multilateral cooperation in tackling global challenges, including climate change, economic fragmentation, and geopolitical tensions.

The SCO, established in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, serves as a regional body for political, economic, and security cooperation across Eurasia. It has since expanded to 10 member states, with several countries participating as observers or dialogue partners. The Maldives currently holds the status of dialogue partner.
President Muizzu’s most recent official visit abroad was to Singapore in late June. That trip focused on enhancing bilateral relations and exploring new opportunities for development cooperation. He also attended a business forum that brought together leading Singaporean companies to promote investment and trade links with the Maldives.
