President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has clarified the government’s decision not to extend the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha holidays, describing such an extension as highly irresponsible.

This statement comes in response to public disappointment following the government’s announcement that only the officially designated calendar days will be observed as holidays for Eid. Many members of the public had anticipated that the government would also close for the three working days from 1 to 3 June, which fall within the Eid period.

Speaking on the seventh episode of the “Rayyithunnaa Eku” podcast, President Muizzu acknowledged these expectations but emphasised the government’s position. While the government has in the past closed for one or two additional working days adjacent to long holidays or weekends to benefit the public, he maintained that extending the Eid holidays by three working days, resulting in a nine-day consecutive break when combined with weekends, would not be responsible.

The President stressed that although shorter closures had been made previously for public convenience, a longer closure would have significant implications and was therefore ruled out.
