President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has received the World No-Tobacco Day Special Recognition Award from the World Health Organization (WHO), acknowledging his leadership in advancing tobacco control policies in the Maldives.

The WHO praised recent government measures introduced under President Muizzu’s administration, including a major amendment to the Tobacco Control Law, the expansion of smoke-free public areas, a nationwide ban on e-cigarettes and e-liquids, and an increase in the legal age for tobacco sales to 21. The Government also implemented a ban on all forms of tobacco advertising and sponsorship, raised tobacco taxes, and established a free cessation programme across all health facilities.

The WHO described these initiatives as a national milestone and an example for other countries working to reduce tobacco use. The award was presented during a World Health Day ceremony at Barceló Nasandhura Malé Hotel, attended by First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed.

In his address, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector through infrastructure development, skill-building, and support for the healthcare workforce. He acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly in recruiting local nurses, and encouraged trained Maldivians to apply for nursing roles. Measures to ensure consistent medicine supply and reduce financial waste in the sector were also highlighted.

President Muizzu also expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, condemned Israeli actions against Palestinians, and stressed the health risks posed by climate change to small island nations like the Maldives.

Reflecting on the country’s public health achievements—including WHO certifications for eliminating polio, malaria, lymphatic filariasis, and neonatal tetanus—President Muizzu said the Administration remains committed to ensuring accessible, affordable, and preventive healthcare nationwide.
