President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that fishing is the profession Maldivians are most proud of, as it is connected to the nation’s history and culture and showcases the talents of fishermen.

He made the remarks in a social media post marking Fishermen’s Day, celebrated annually on 10 December. President Muizzu noted that fisheries have been integral to Maldivian life since the earliest days of settlement, with seafood forming a staple of the national diet.

Highlighting his Administration’s efforts to develop the sector, the President said one of its main goals is to diversify the fisheries industry, increase productivity, and raise the incomes of fishermen’s families. He added that the government aims to maximise the economic benefits of fishing, modernise the industry, and create more opportunities for those working in it.

“One of the government’s main goals is to expand the fisheries industry, boost productivity, and increase the income of fishermen’s families, maximising the benefits of fishing for the country’s economy,” President Muizzu said.

President Muizzu concluded by sending his greetings to all members of the industry and their families.

First Lady Saajida Mohamed also shared a message, expressing gratitude to Maldivian fishermen for their courage and hard work and extending her congratulations on Fishermen’s Day.

This year, the official Fishermen’s Day celebrations are being held in Dhuvaafaru, Raa Atoll.
