President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong this afternoon, marking 50 years of diplomatic ties between the Maldives and Singapore, and witnessed the signing of three agreements to strengthen cooperation in capacity building, environmental sustainability, and technical education.
According to the President’s Office, during their discussions, both leaders emphasised the significance of this historic milestone and reflected on Singaporean contributions to the Maldives’ development, particularly in the tourism sector. They explored new avenues for economic cooperation, including diversification through expanded fisheries exports to emerging markets.
President Muizzu and Prime Minister Wong also addressed renewable energy investment opportunities. The discussions aligned with the Maldivian Government’s target to generate 33 percent of national electricity from renewable sources by 2028.

Education and human capital development featured prominently in the talks, covering both basic education and technical skills. The leaders also agreed on the importance of exchanging technical expertise in urban planning. As small island states, both countries recognised the need to strengthen cooperation on multilateral platforms, especially in addressing climate change—a pressing threat to low-lying nations.
President Muizzu and Prime Minister Wong also witnessed the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation:
- MoU on Cooperation in Capacity Building between the two governments.
- MoU on Sustainability and Environment between the Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism and Environment and Singapore’s Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment.
- MoU on Higher and Technical Education between Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education and the Maldives’ Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development.
The signing ceremony took place at Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed arrived in Singapore on 29 June at the invitation of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. They are scheduled to return to Malé on 2 July.
