President Muizzu Offers Condolences to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia After Severe Weather

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended heartfelt condolences to Sri Lanka and other Southeast Asian nations following severe weather conditions in the region.
In a message on his official X account, President Muizzu conveyed sorrow over the loss of life and widespread damage caused by extreme weather in Sri Lanka. In a separate message, he said Maldives mourns the loss of lives and the destruction across Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam, describing the catastrophic weather as a stark reminder of the escalating impacts of climate change.
“The extreme weather devastating Southeast Asia is a tragic reminder of the escalating impacts of climate change. The Maldives mourns the loss of lives and the destruction across Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam,” President Muizzu said.

He also expressed profound sorrow over the deadly fire in Hong Kong, which claimed multiple lives, extending condolences to the President of the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Xi Jinping, the government, and the families of the victims.
President Muizzu commended the bravery of rescue teams responding to the crises and reaffirmed that the people of the Maldives stand in solidarity with all those affected.
Sri Lanka is currently facing extreme weather conditions, with the heavy rains having already risen to 69, with approximately 34 still missing, according to foreign media reports. This week’s weather-related toll is the highest since June last year, when 26 people were killed following heavy rain.
As of yesterday, the flooding across Southeast Asia has killed more than 300 people in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.
