President Muizzu Outlines Plans to Resume Stalled Projects in Shaviyani Atoll’s Feevah, Feydhoo, Foakaidhoo, and Komandoo

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has outlined plans for stalled and upcoming development projects in Feevah, Feydhoo, Foakaidhoo, and airport development in Komandoo yesterday during his ongoing four-day tour of Shaviyani Atoll. 

The tour, which began on Monday, covers 14 inhabited islands, with visits to Milandhoo, Narudhoo, Maroshi, Lhaimagu, Funadhoo, and Maalhendhoo yet to take place.

Komandoo Airport and Infrastructure Development

President Muizzu announced that Komandoo’s airport will be completed and operational within 30 months. The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) will oversee reclamation and construction works, with completion of reclamation expected within eight months using advanced dredgers sourced internationally.

Additional developments on Komandoo include a 50-unit housing project beginning in the first quarter of 2026, renovations to Komandoo School, and construction of an Indoor Sports Complex. According to the President’s Office, the President pledged to introduce dialysis services before year-end and resume the stalled water and sewerage network project.

At meetings with the Island Council, Women’s Development Committee, and local institution heads, priorities highlighted included linking Komandoo and Mathi Komandoo, resuming the sewerage project, providing utilities to new land plots, starting the ice plant project, road construction, and developing a sports complex. Residents also requested a dialysis unit and school renovations, including perimeter wall repairs.

Resuming Waste Management Projects in Feevah

President Muizzu pledged to restart stalled waste management initiatives across 20 northern islands, including Feevah. He acknowledged limited progress on externally funded projects and said new arrangements are being implemented to overcome delays.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which is handling multiple projects on the island, will redevelop the muddy area allocated for housing plots. According to the President’s Office, work has also begun on a fitness and recreation centre, a new school building, and a police station. President Muizzu confirmed that funds will be allocated in the 2026 Budget to upgrade the health centre to provide 24-hour services and warned that the administration may replace the current contractor if progress does not meet expectations within two weeks.

Resuming School Project in Feydhoo

President Muizzu confirmed that Feydhoo’s long-delayed school project will resume shortly, with construction on the multipurpose hall and classrooms proceeding at full capacity, while speaking to the residents of Feydhoo. He highlighted coordinated implementation of coastal protection works, harbour and road development, and a public beach access area.

The President also announced upgrades to the island’s health facilities, including the introduction of 24-hour services at the Health Centre. Sports facilities will be enhanced with a new handball court and improvements to futsal and football grounds. Feydhoo will also receive a new Police Station and Council Secretariat funded through Chinese grant assistance.

Discussions with local leaders covered resuming the eight-classroom building, coastal protection, water and sewerage activation, and additional community requests including a waste management centre, mosque, handball court, indoor gym, and night lighting for the football field.

Development Projects in Foakaidhoo

President Muizzu unveiled a series of development initiatives for Foakaidhoo, including road modernisation and the appointment of a resident physician at the Health Centre. Planned youth facilities include a futsal pitch and handball court, while a new school building and housing schemes are included in the 2026 budget.

Physical works have commenced on a Waste and Resource Management Centre, a Police Station, and an Islamic Centre. MTCC will develop a beach access area while addressing erosion and undertaking shore protection works. Local priorities also include shoreline protection, expanded roads, and utility services for new housing plots. School representatives highlighted space shortages, a lack of science classrooms and a student laboratory, and requested a fitness centre, handball court, and X-ray services at the Health Centre.
