President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the allocation of plots and flats under the government’s social housing projects will be based on the specific needs and circumstances of each island’s residents, following principles set by the respective island councils.

The President made these remarks during a meeting with residents of Thulhaadhoo this morning, as part of his ongoing four-day tour of Baa Atoll.

During the visit, President Muizzu confirmed plans to develop 100 new housing units on the island. He reiterated that the government will allocate housing according to standards and priorities established by the island council, ensuring decisions reflect local realities. He also assured residents that the government will facilitate the privatisation of 119 reclaimed plots in response to their requests.

President Muizzu inaugurated the Thulhaadhoo Airport project today as well, and pledged that construction would begin promptly and continue without interruption.

Highlighting Thulhaadhoo as the second-highest priority island in Baa Atoll’s regional development strategy, the President announced plans to enhance the island’s health sector. This includes introducing specialist medical services at the health centre, with dedicated care for women and children.

Earlier today, the President met with members of the Thulhaadhoo Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and heads of local institutions at Thulhaadhoo School to discuss key development priorities.

Council members raised the need to designate a picnic area for residents and called for swift action. They also urged acceleration of two major projects: housing construction and completion of the island’s court building. Other concerns included the need for spare parts for the power plant and establishing a handball court.

Institutional leaders highlighted the necessity of repairs and additional staff for Thulhaadhoo School, as well as more personnel for the Thulhaadhoo Health Centre.

In response, President Muizzu assured the government would review the issues raised and seek effective solutions. He also provided updates on ongoing projects on the island, alongside Cabinet Ministers and heads of State-Owned Enterprises.

Accompanied by several ministers and senior officials, President Muizzu began his tour yesterday and will visit all 13 inhabited islands in Baa Atoll.
