President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to working closely with Sri Lanka to pursue shared aspirations, including uplifting livelihoods, fostering peace and progress, and building a future grounded in solidarity and a common vision.

He made the remarks yesterday during a state banquet hosted in honour of Anura Kumara Dissanayake, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, who is currently on his first state visit to the Maldives since assuming office in September 2024.

Addressing the banquet, attended by senior officias from both the Maldives and Sri Lanka, President Muizzu emphasised that the Maldives–Sri Lanka relationship extends beyond geographic proximity. Reflecting on six decades of diplomatic ties, he said the bond between the two nations is rooted in a shared history, common values, and strong people-to-people connections.

President Muizzu praised the warmth, hospitality, and generosity of the Sri Lankan people, noting that these qualities have long left a lasting impression on Maldivians. He also highlighted the evolution of bilateral cooperation, which now encompasses tourism, digital technology, security, and cultural exchange. These developments, he said, reflect the dynamism of the relationship and a joint ambition to adapt to the demands of a rapidly changing world.

He described earlier discussions between the two delegations as meaningful and productive, expressing optimism about future cooperation. The President concluded by reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to work with Sri Lanka to unlock new opportunities, promote inclusive prosperity, support sustainable development, and ensure regional stability.

President Dissanayake’s visit marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations, as the Maldives and Sri Lanka commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties, established in 1965.
