He met with Island Councils, Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), institutional heads, and residents of these thirteen islands to discuss local development priorities and review the situation on each island.

The President was accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and senior officials from key government institutions. The delegation shared progress updates on ongoing development projects and addressed issues raised by communities during the meetings.

Harbour Relocation in Kumundhoo

During his visit to Kumundhoo, the President pledged to relocate the island’s harbour, citing it as the most pressing challenge for residents. He announced that practical work on the relocation will begin within two months, with construction to take place at a site agreed upon by the community.

As part of the project, a dedicated beach area will also be developed. In addition, agreements were signed to improve the island’s road network and build a multi-purpose hall. The President inaugurated the water and sewerage network project and announced that a new multi-purpose hall for Kumundhoo School would be constructed within three months.

Sports and recreation facilities are also planned, including a futsal pitch and volleyball court, alongside ongoing work to upgrade the football grounds. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for a fitness and recreation centre, a police station, and a health centre, while a Bank of Maldives ATM service was officially launched.

Healthcare and Infrastructure in Kurin’bi

Addressing residents of Kurin’bi today, President Muizzu pledged to operate the new health centre as a 24-hour facility once construction is complete. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the project to build the new premises, which will include additional wards, a laboratory, and public health units.

He noted that efforts are underway to extend the centre’s hours to 16 hours daily, even before completion of the new building.

The President also highlighted progress on Kurin’bi’s harbour development, stating that the project would incorporate modifications requested by residents and environmental safeguards in its second phase. He added that the new multi-purpose hall for Kurin’bi School will provide four additional classrooms.

In sports development, a futsal court and handball court will be established alongside a football field, with the futsal court scheduled for completion within the year. The President also inaugurated a Bank of Maldives ATM service and presided over groundbreaking ceremonies for a fitness and recreation centre.

Strengthening Decentralised Governance in Kulhudhuffushi

In Kulhudhuffushi City, President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening decentralised governance. Drawing on his experience as former Mayor, he pledged to ensure that councils are empowered and free from undue interference.

He highlighted reforms already underway, including revised allowances for Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), greater council involvement in infrastructure projects, and the integration of islands and lagoons into local jurisdictions. The President stressed that these efforts would align with national development frameworks and approved land-use plans.

Economic Development in Neykurendhoo

During his visit to Neykurendhoo, the President announced that land previously designated for a jail has been handed over to the Island Council for community-led economic initiatives.

He presided over the signing of an agreement to develop a swimming track, to be carried out alongside harbour development works. These include a 100-foot extension, boat docking areas, beach facilities, and future shore protection measures.

The President also pledged to complete the long-delayed school project in time for the next academic year and confirmed funding for a multi-purpose hall in next year’s budget. He announced plans to extend the health centre, construct a fitness and recreation centre, develop an indoor badminton court, and enhance football grounds.

Education and Harbour Development in Vaikaradhoo

In Vaikaradhoo, President Muizzu pledged to establish a branch of the Centre for the Holy Quran early next year, responding to a request from the community. He also oversaw the signing of an agreement with MTCC to upgrade the island’s harbour, which will include a community beach area.

The President committed to completing the stalled construction of a 12-classroom facility within the year and announced plans to relocate the island’s powerhouse. He further pledged to revise cargo ferry routes to support Vaikaradhoo’s agriculture sector, making the island a departure point.

Airport for Makunudhoo

Acknowledging the geographic dispersion of the Maldives, President Muizzu emphasised the strategic importance of establishing an airport in Haa Dhaalu Makunudhoo. He said the project would address longstanding travel difficulties, strengthen connectivity, and drive economic growth.

The President confirmed that Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) would operate the airport once completed, while 22 hectares of land will be allocated for the project, including a planned 1,800-metre runway. He also announced the upgrade of Makunudhoo Health Centre to a Level-6 facility, enabling the provision of specialised healthcare services and advanced diagnostics.
