Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih rebutted President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu’s alleged belief that the Maldivian people are stupid, emphasising the populace’s current discernment and awareness.
Solih’s comments come amidst a backdrop of political discourse regarding the trustworthiness of government initiatives and policies.
Solih asserted that the Maldivian populace will demonstrate their discernment in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, rejecting any insinuation of naivety.
“I think Dr. Muizzu thinks that the people of Maldives are so stupid. No, that is not the case with the people of Maldives today. It is very clear that what he is saying is a lie,” Solih remarked.
He criticised the current government’s approach to governance, suggesting a lack of coherent planning and strategy. Solih highlighted specific instances where he believes promises were made without foresight or consideration for practicality.
“This government has shaped its policies without any plan, otherwise the forest would not have stopped,” he commented.
Furthermore, Solih pointed to infrastructure projects initiated by the current administration, questioning their necessity and viability. He cited examples such as the expansion of airport facilities and the allocation of funds for various developments.
“Many, many lies were being made to deceive the people,” Solih stated.
In contrast to the current administration’s approach, Solih advocated for a more systematic method of project implementation, emphasising the importance of completing ongoing initiatives before embarking on new ventures. He also raised concerns about proposed relocation plans, such as the proposition to move residents of Fushidhiggaru island via a glass pipe.
Solih’s remarks underscore the ongoing debate surrounding governance and accountability in the Maldives, as political figures engage in discourse ahead of upcoming electoral events.
