President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced last night that the policy for this administration’s housing scheme for Rasmalé will be announced next week, with the applications opening in a month.
Speaking at the “Dhiveheenge Raajje” gathering hosted by the People’s National Congress (PNC) at Malé’s Artificial Beach to mark the second anniversary of his administration, President Muizzu highlighted the government’s ongoing and planned housing initiatives. He said he remembers “all pledges” made during his campaign and would “be fulfilling them all.”
Referring to the government’s housing commitments, he noted the 3,000 housing units already signed for development in the Greater Malé Area through the new subsidiary formed by Bank of Maldives. He added that further units would follow, bringing the total to 7,500, including 4,000 housing units to be developed under India’s Line of Credit facility.
President Muizzu reiterated the commitment to allocate 15,000 housing plots to long-term Malé residents, regardless of their island of origin. He said applications for these plots would open soon.
“For there, we will announce the policy within the next week and will open applications within a month,” he said.
He added that the pace of the Rasmalé reclamation project remains on track. The project, expected to be completed within five months, will create 1,100 hectares of land—twice the size of Hulhumalé Phase 1 and 2 combined. He said the government aims to finalise land allocation by the time the reclamation is completed.
“God be willing, by the time the reclamation is completed, those who will receive the land will have been determined,” he said.
The President also reiterated his previously announced family housing initiative, which prioritises individuals over 18 without housing. He recalled pledges made during his campaign to support groups such as single mothers and fathers, people with disabilities, people with deceased mothers, staff from various institutions, and those working in the tourism sector. He said specific housing units and land plots would be reserved for these groups under the schemes set to open soon.
