President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has urged Maldivian writers to actively champion the advancement of their religion, nation, and identity. He delivered this message today in a special address marking National Writers’ Day.

Highlighting the significance of the day, President Muizzu noted that Maldivians commemorated National Writers’ Day on 8 July, the date in 1933 when the nation’s first publication, Al Islaahu, was released. He noted this publication aimed to improve the nation in various domains, as the name Al Islaahu means to improve.

The president emphasised that writers contribute to every facet of the nation, particularly in shaping personal, civil, and international relations, as well as in areas such as religion, education, business, and politics.

He stated that from a religious standpoint, the Maldives need the support of writers to strengthen public faith and discipline. He also reminded writers of their national duty—to serve with integrity and to uphold the dignity of literature in every sphere they engage in.

The President observed that many political leaders reach the presidency through the manifestos they craft, underscoring the power of the written word to inspire and guide.

He called on writers to use their pens purposefully—for the progress of Maldivian communities and the enrichment of local literature through fresh ideas and perspectives.

“Literature is a matter of faith. Nations are shaped by the thoughts and ideas of writers. At the same time, reckless writing continues to damage societies,” he warned.

Via his official X account, President Muizzu also extended greetings to writers across the nation, acknowledging their responsibility to preserve the language and recognising the enduring significance of historical words and dates.
